Vladimir Guerrero arrest
Vladimir Guerrero arrest, Aging MLB star Vladimir Guerrero has turned himself over to authorities after allegedly running afoul of the law in a foreign country. The 37-year-old free agent is accused of assaulting a police officer during a fight at a "disco club" No charges have yet been filed, but unemployed slugger Vladimir Guerrero has turned himself in to Police in the Dominican Republic after playing a role in a brawl outside of a disco in the Dominican city of Nizao.
"No one is above the law," said Dominican South Region Police director Juan Ramon de la Cruz, as reported by Dominican Today. "Guerrero and the others will be charged for the incident, which left one injured."
According to the Washington Post, a Police spokesman says Guerrero "physically attacked" a Police officer.
"At no time did I attack anyone, nor was I fleeing," Guerrero told The Associated Press. "I presented myself at the jail last night after the complaint from the disco, and this morning first thing I went to the police that are handling the case."
Guerrero was one of a number of older baseball stars who could not find a job with an MLB club this past winter. Naturally, with nothing to occupy themselves, these players take to the discotheques, where trouble awaits.
Unfortunately for Vladimir Guerrero the police have been more interested in him this offseason than have Major League Baseball clubs. Yesterday there was a warrant out for Guerrero’s arrest in his native Dominican Republic for “alleged aggression” against a police officer. Later in the day Guerrero and several members of his family surrendered to the police.According to Rafael Rojas, Guerrero will be charged with physical and verbal assault to an authority. Rojas added that as of yesterday morning Guerrero was being held at a police precinct in Bani.
Beyond Guerrero, the Dominican Today reported that one of his brothers, two of his cousins and a worker were being held for their part in a “melee”. The brawl reportedly took place in a discotheque.
Several community leaders including Guerrero’s brother Wilton have come forward to defend the player’s integrity. These parties denied that Guerrero assaulted the police officer as has been reported.
No team was willing to take a flier on Guerrero before the season began, though he has recently worked out for the Cleveland Indians. Late into the offseason, Guerrero said that if he was unable to reach an agreement with a major league team he would consider moving to Japan to continue his baseball career.
It appears former Texas Rangers outfielder Vladimir Guerrero has a little too much time on his hands since he’s not in uniform this summer– so far, anyway– for any MLB club.
According to a few reports, Dominican police are in pursuit of Guerrero and have issued an APB for his arrest following an alleged bar brawl in Santo
Domingo last evening.
In the midst of a bar brawl, it is being reported that Guerrero assaulted a Dominican police officer prior to fleeing the scene.
The following is an excerpt from the Dominican News describing what happened:
The National Police on Tuesday announced an all points bulleting for the arrest of Major League Baseball star Vladimir Guerrero, for the alleged aggression against of a Police major and for unleashing a brawl in a discotheque.
Police spokesman Maximo Baez said one of Guerrero’s brothers, two cousins and a worker are being held for their alleged part in the melee.
Police chief major general (Jose) Polanco instructed Baní regional (south) director general (Juan Ramon) de la Cruz Martinez to continue the pursuit.
Known across baseball for his fiery temper on and off the field, this report is hardly a surprise.
Few details beyond what was reported by the Dominican News have yet been made available, but if an APB has been issued for Guerrero’s arrest, one has to assume things won’t be getting better any time soon.
Vlad Guerrero last appeared in a major league uniform for the Baltimore Orioles in 2011, hitting .290 with 13 home runs and 63 runs batted in.
The funny thing is, there had to be a few teams in desperate need of a power bat– the Chicago Cubs are one I can think of off the top– that may have considered Guerrero for a mid-to-late season rental, but given this recent situation may now pull back.
